The Jar

iPhone · Beta

Set the rule.
Break the rule. Pay the price.

A shared ledger for the small stuff. Agree on what costs what, keep score honestly, and settle up however you already do.

How it works

Three steps, and none of them involve your bank.

  1. Write the rule

Name the thing, set the price, pick who it applies to. The rule reads back as a plain sentence, so there is nothing to argue about later.

If anyone breaks the rule “Dishes in the sink”, they owe $1.00 to Karen.
  2. Report it when it happens

You get sixty seconds to take it back. After that it goes to the person it names, who can confirm or dispute it — and saying nothing for forty-eight hours counts as confirming.

  3. Settle up

When you're ready, close the period and the jar hands you an itemised receipt of who owes whom. You square it however you already do. The Jar just remembers.

The important part

The Jar never touches money.

It holds nothing, moves nothing, and takes no cut. Every figure on this page is a note between two people about what they owe each other — the same as a tally on the fridge, with better arithmetic.

Nobody gets billed. Nobody gets chased. Leave a jar and your balance is cleared, not collected.

Caps

Nobody should owe $25 for one bad cuticle day.

Every rule carries a ceiling, and every jar carries another one on top. Twenty dollars is the most a single entry can ever cost. Past the cap the behavior is still recorded — at zero — because the point was always the pattern rather than the payout.

What people keep in them

One jar per relationship you are keeping score in.
